Ed Barlow's Sybase Stuff

PERL LINKS AND INFORMATION

This document is is designed to point out perl information to Sybase Developers and Administrators.  I think perl is THE BEST PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE I HAVE SEEN!!!!!  As perl is often used for web site development, i have also provided information helpful to web site developers.  Perl is a cross between shell programming and C, that has all the advantages of both and none of the disadvantages.  I have found perl to be a "magical" language in the sense that if you think something should work, it probably will.  It is absolutely the ideal choice of languages for Sybase system administrators (thanx to michael peppler who wrote the sybase perl library).

Perl Links, Scripts & Web Design Information

The main perl information sites are http://www.perl.com and http://language.perl.com and the perl mongers users group can be found at http://www.perl.org.  These are great online references, with documentation, free perl modules in the Comprehensive Perl Archive Network (CPAN), articles on the inner workings of many bits of Perl, and more.

WHERE TO GET PERL

Perl 5.00504 is the latest and most stable version of Perl.  Many bugs have been fixed with this release, several useful new features added, and much more documentation has been provided.  You can download the perl in either source or binary format from http://www.perl.com

NEWSGROUPS

comp.lang.perl.misc is for questions on the Perl language.  Try comp.infosystems.www.authoring.cgi for questions on the CGI part of CGI scripts.

If you are looking for an answer to something that might have been previously posted, you can check out the archives of Usenet at  http://www.dejanews.com/.  Dejanews maintains an archive of postings to Usenet dating from March, 1995. Be sure to include "Perl" in your search.

PERL BOOKS

The latest version of the "Camel Book" ("Programming Perl") is available from your bookstore or from http://www.ora.com/. Programming perl is an excellent resource.

PERL FOR WINDOWS

Perl for NT/Windows 95 is provided by www.activestate.com. I use it extensively and suggest you check out.

PERL FOR SYBASE

Check out the perl utilities for sybase listed in the free software section of this web site.

OTHER THINGS PERL CAN DO FOR YOU

I have designed a form library for perl that i have used successfully for several clients to convert ASCII menuing scripts in use by operators to a full featured web browser based GUI.  Give me a buzz if this kind of service is of interest to you.  I will do work of this sort either fixed price or on an hourly basis.
